The Region 4 Alternative Teacher Certification Program is an alternative certification program designed for university graduates (bachelor's degree or higher) who meet certain minimum criteria to obtain teacher certification through plans approved by the state of Texas. Region 4 Alternative Teacher Certification is considered an 'alternative' route because it accomplishes certification outside of the traditional university program setting.
The program consists of 10-18 weeks of training, depending on the chosen certification area(s), and the choice to participate in a one-year teaching internship or an unpaid twelve-week clinical teaching assignment (similar to student teaching). During an internship, the participant serves as a teacher of record with the role and responsibilities of any first year teacher. Clinical teaching consists of a twelve-week, unpaid program in which the participant teaches in a classroom and is guided by a certified teacher. An internship or clinical teaching position may be served in any public school, charter school, or accredited private school in the state of Texas.
After all program requirements are complete, including all training and the one-year internship or twelve-week clinical teaching, the intern will be recommended to the state for a standard teaching certificate.
Program rules and requirements are subject to change at any time due to State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) requirements.
Candidates who are approved for 8-12 Math, 8-12 Math/Physics, or 8-12 Science (Composite, Chemistry, Life, or Physical Science) and have passed the appropriate content exam or have 24 semester hours pay only $195 for pre-service training.
